Do Unto Others Day

People don't think that one individual can make a difference in the world, but the truth is, one can make a difference...you just have to try.

Today is do unto others day. The golden rule should be followed to the letter today. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Simple, sweet, and right to the point. In other words, be kind to people. Smile when you pass someone in the street, even if they don't smile back. Hold a door open for someone else, even if they don't have packages in their hands. Allow someone to go ahead of you in line at the supermarket or at the movie theater when you're standing in line to buy tickets.

Say hello to the next person you see, even if you have no idea who that person is. In the Bible it is written that sometimes we entertain angels unawares, so it is possible that the last person you acted ornery with could have been an angel in disguise. Be nice to everyone today, even if they are not particularly nice to you, because you are laying up treasures in Heaven when you do these things.

Say, “God bless you” when someone sneezes, and watch the smile form on his or her face. Give someone else your seat on the subway, or let them share your seat on the bus. If someone attacks you verbally today, just shrug and walk away, and let them rant and rave to thin air. Don't attack back because this just keeps the argument going and solves nothing. Be helpful to others, give gentle advice when it is needed and requested. Above all, just treat everyone else you meet today as you would have them treat you.

I wonder how many world problems we could solve in just one day's time, if the whole world tried its best to be kind to everyone else on the planet? Do you have a pen pal you speak to on the internet who lives in another region of the world from your own? Send lovely greetings to that person, and light up his or her day. That person in turn will feel good and will pass on the sentiment to someone else, and on and on it goes. You don't think one person can change the world? Try it sometime.

One person can change the world, and make a huge difference in society simply by being the kind of person that everyone should be. This sort of thing tends to spread itself around you know. The old expression, “what goes around, comes around” is a very truthful sentiment, as is, “you reap what you sow”. If you sow goodness, forgiveness and joy around the world, it will come back to you a thousand-fold. By contrast, if you sow misery and discontent, hatred and anger around the world, that will come back to you as well.

If somebody drops something today, you pick it up for them, if someone in a wheelchair cannot reach a product on the shelf in the supermarket, you reach it for them. If someone trips and falls, you run to his or her aid if possible. Put your shopping cart where it belongs instead of leaving it in the parking lot where it can roll right into someone else's car. Try not to hit someone else's car door with your door when you open it, and be polite, waiting your turn patiently in all things even when you don't feel so patient inside.

Yes, it is do unto others day today, and tomorrow too, and the day after that. Make it a habit that you want to get into rather than a bad habit you want to get out of. Spread a little sunshine around today and the host of Heaven will rejoice , which just might cheer you up a little bit too. In closing, I have just one tiny thing left to say…..Have a wonderful day!….And smile.
